Janis Brodrick

Janis L. Brodrick, 93, of Frankfort, Indiana went to be with her Lord on Friday, February 12, 2021 at Wesley Manor.  She was born on April 16, 1927, in Greenville, Ohio to John and Mary Oliver.  She married her childhood sweetheart, Lowell Brodrick, on August 10, 1947. They were married 61 years before he passed in 2009.  Together they raised three daughters.

Janis dedicated her life to teaching young children.  She attended Manchester College and later received her B.S. in Elementary Education from Butler University.  When she was in her 50’s, Janis earned a Masters in Education from Indiana University.  She retired in 1989 after teaching kindergarten for 31 years in Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Frankfort.

In addition to raising daughters and having a career in teaching, Janis was an active volunteer in her community.  When her daughters were young she was a Camp Fire Girls leader, a Vacation Bible School Teacher, and a Sunday School teacher for 50 years. Later she served as a Pink Lady at her local hospital, shopped for residents at Wesley Manor, delivered meals for Meals on Wheels, and tutored adults in the Literacy Program at the Frankfort Public Library. Somehow, Janis found time to sew and quilt and became the President and charter member of the Frankfort Quilt Guild.

She and Lowell enjoyed traveling and exploring new places in their camper.  They visited all 50 states and also ventured to Mexico, Canada, and Israel. One of their favorite adventures was their road trip to Alaska, sleeping in a tent every night along the way.

Janis is survived by her daughters, Debora Johnson (Allen), of Dunmore, WV, Beth Yakey (Ace), of Indianapolis, IN, and Sandra Horvath of West Chicago, IL; sister, Carol Burkett (Paul) of North Manchester, IN; brother, Jim Oliver of Greenville, OH: grandchildren, Jesse Johnson, Ethan (Melinda) Johnson, Joel (Naomi) Johnson, Micah (Heather) Johnson, Abby (Jake) Jones, Anna (Guido) Haus, Rachel (Steve Ramirez) Horvath, Nick (Lauren) Horvath; and 15 great grandchildren with one on the way!

Known to have never raised her voice or never to have said an unkind word, Janis will be remembered as a gentle, thoughtful, and compassionate human being. Those who were fortunate enough to have her in their lives will miss her and remember her fondly.

No funeral services are scheduled at this time.  Memorial donations may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund (Wesley Manor, 1555 N. Main Street, Frankfort, IN  46041).
